Key Responsibilities
You will be the on-the-ground champion for our safety program, with key duties including:
- Acting as a primary safety resource, conducting new employee orientations and promoting safety initiatives across the company.
- Leading thorough incident/accident investigations to determine root cause and develop effective corrective actions.
- Conducting regular worksite inspections and audits to ensure compliance with SGC policies, procedures, and Alberta OH&S legislation.
- Supporting the Safety Manager in maintaining the Modified Work Program, managing WCB claims, and tracking all safety training records.
- Educating employees on safety policies, including Drug & Alcohol, Fit-for-Duty, and assistance programs.
- Ensuring all safety documentation is up-to-date and accessible, including SDS sheets and inspection records.
- Promoting a proactive, team-oriented safety culture through consistent dialogue and collaboration with all employees and project teams.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring a strong blend of certification, experience, and soft skills:
- A valid NCSO Certification (including COR Auditor status in good standing) is required.
- Grade 12 or GED; a post-secondary OHS Certificate is a strong asset.
- Minimum 5+ years of proven experience within a safety department, preferably in heavy civil construction.
- In-depth knowledge of Alberta OH&S legislation, WCB processes, and root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys, TapRooT).
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract.
- Standard First Aid; additional certifications (Ground Disturbance L2, Confined Space, Train-the-Trainer) are assets.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office; experience with Enablon software is beneficial.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and report-writing skills. Fluency in Spanish or Arabic is an asset.
- Must be available to work Monday-Friday (7:00 AM – 4:00 PM) and be on-call evenings/weekends.
