Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka is seeking a dedicated Maintenance Helper to join the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Forces Branch. In this role, you’ll assist higher-grade maintenance workers in keeping fitness facilities and equipment in optimal operating condition across the installation. About the Position

This full-time, permanent position is assigned to the Fitness, Sports, and Deployed Forces Branch within Fleet Readiness at Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC). Working under the direct supervision of the Fitness Facility Coordinator, Sports Coordinator, or Fitness Director, you’ll assist with general maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of fitness facilities and equipment. From simple plumbing and electrical repairs to painting, carpentry, and custodial duties, your work will directly support the mission of providing quality fitness and recreation opportunities for the military community at Yokosuka.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as an assistant to higher-grade maintenance workers and mechanics, supporting the maintenance of all fitness program equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in one or more trade practices, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, air conditioning, painting, and related trades.
  • Help perform general maintenance, repair, and alterations to doors, floors, floor covering, walls, ceilings, windows, electrical switches, receptacles, light fixtures, commodes, wash basins, and showers.
  • Assist in repairing fitness, recreation, and mess equipment and appliances, along with other maintenance and custodial duties.
  • Perform simple plumbing repairs, including replacing faucets and washers, repairing toilet flushing devices, clearing clogged drains, and tightening leaking pipe joints.
  • Assist with light maintenance on air conditioning units and intermediate maintenance on facility equipment.
  • Support minor electrical repairs to switches and boxes, replacing electric lights, fuses, and fixtures.
  • Drive motor vehicles to and from work sites, warehouses, and dumps as required.
  • Maintain the maintenance area in a safe and clean condition.
  • Observe environmental, safety, security, and housekeeping rules and regulations.
  • Assist with maintaining fitness facilities, including athletic fields.

Qualifications and Requirements

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain the following certifications within 90 days of hire:
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certification
  • Navy Basic Fitness Certification
  • Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment weighing up to 10 pounds, occasionally handling materials up to 40 pounds and over.
  • Requires prolonged standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Must be able to work under the direct and constant supervision of designated supervisors.
  • Ability to perform simple tasks independently after receiving detailed instructions.
  • Exercise continual care due to the nature of tools and equipment used and the weight of objects handled.
  • Basic knowledge of trade practices sufficient to complete simple tasks using common skills.
  • Familiarity with the safe use of common hand and powered tools.
  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision, including maintenance duties such as plumbing, painting, air conditioning, carpentry, and electricity.

Preferred Background:

Navy rates with relevant experience include Machinist’s Mates, Machinery Repairmen, Hull Technicians, Enginemen, Damage Controlmen, Engine Mechanics, Electrician’s Mates, Builders, Construction Electricians, Construction Mechanics, and Utilitiesmen.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Hourly Wage: $20.11 per hour
